This simple tutorial helps you to install WordPress on XAMPP locally on Ubuntu 18.10 64-bit system. You can apply this tutorial for any version of Ubuntu or any other GNU/Linux distro like Linux Mint, Kubuntu, Ubuntu e.t.c. If you have a 32-bit computer, you cannot use XAMPP on a 32-bit system. WordPress has undoubtedly become the most popular blog publishing and site creation platform. It has become the best Content Management System (CMS) More than 27% percent of the whole Internet runs WordPress, which is a massive feat in itself.
Due to its easy to implement and attractive interface, WordPress attracts millions of users worldwide. In addition, WordPress is home to thousands of plugins. Plugins make it so much easier to enable any feature or perform any complicated tasks that take several hours of time and coding skills. It is no wonder why the majority of people love them.
XAMPP is easy to install. If you need to learn PHP/MySQL and WordPress locally, XAMPP is very suitable. It provides
1. Download WordPress
WordPress is a collection of PHP source code integrated together to form a Content Management System(CMS). WordPress (the content management system) and wordpress.com (the webservice) are different. You can download the WordPress software package from https://wordpress.org/download/ as a package (either on ZIP or TAR). At the time I write this article (January 30st 2019) it reached version 5.0.3.
Follow this XAMPP Installation Tutorial if you haven’t already installed XAMPP in your system. Please be aware this is only for 64bit computers.
2. Extract WordPress Package
Now, extract the downloaded WordPress package on your download folder. Right-click > Extract Here
This should now give you a ‘wordpress-5.0.3’ named folder on your downloaded folder.
3. Move WordPress Directory
Open your terminal and perform the following command to move your WordPress directory to the required directory.
Note: change wordpress-5.0.3 with our correct version of wordpress.
$ cd Downloads/wordpress-5.0.3
$ sudo mv wordpress /opt/lampp/htdocs
Now, open the /opt/

Note: Put your username in your-user-name and group of user in your-group-name. For me my group is same as my username.
$ groups your-user-name //output will give you the group name
$ sudo chown your-user-name:your-group-name /opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress
5. Create Database
Now, start your XAMPP server and close Terminal and head to the browser and go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin. Go to

Now, go to your wordpress directory i.e /opt/lampp/htdocs/wordpress. You will find a wp-config-sample.php file.

Note: Change the database name to the database you have created in above step. Database user is ‘root’ and password is blank by default. You can change the database user and password and change here aswell.
7. Run WordPress Installation
The last step: now visit the address http://localhost/wordpresss. Now, fill the website info as you wish. Determine username and password as you wish.
